Approximation in Mathematics – Rules, Tricks, Examples & 20 MCQs for Competitive Exams

⭐ Approximation (Detailed Explanation)

  • Approximation means finding a value that is close to the exact value but easier and faster to calculate — especially useful in competitive exams where speed matters.
  • It involves rounding numbers, estimating totals, and removing small decimals to quickly compute answers without solving fully.
Why Approximation Is Used in Exams?
  • Saves time in long calculations

  • Helps check whether an answer is reasonable

  • Used heavily in Banking, SSC, NRA CET, Railways, CAT, MAT, CSAT, etc.

🧠 Rounding Rules (Very Important for Approximation)

1. Rounding to nearest integer

  • If decimal part ≥ 0.5 → Round up
    Example: 3.8 → 4

  • If decimal part < 0.5 → Round down
    Example: 7.2 → 7

2. Rounding to nearest tens

  • Look at the last digit:
    Example: 67 → 70 (since 7 ≥ 5)

3. Rounding to nearest hundreds
  • Example: 348 → 300 (since 48 < 50)
4. Multiplication Approximation
  • Round numbers to convenient values:
    Example: 19.9 × 49.8 ≈ 20 × 50
5. Division Approximation
  • Example: 498 ÷ 50 ≈ 500 ÷ 50 = 10

⭐ 5 Solved Examples of Approximation (With Explanation)

Example 1
Approximate:
37.8+12.437.8 + 12.4
Solution

Round each number to nearest integer:

  • 37.8 ≈ 38
  • 12.4 ≈ 12

Now add:
38 + 12 = 50

Final Approximate Answer: 50
Example 2
Approximate:
49.6×19.849.6 × 19.8
Solution

Round values to nearest convenient number:

  • 49.6 ≈ 50
  • 19.8 ≈ 20

Multiply:
50 × 20 = 1000

Final Approximate Answer: 1000
Example 3
Approximate:
498/32
Solution

Round numerator and denominator:

  • 498 ≈ 500
  • 32 ≈ 30

Now divide:
500 ÷ 30 ≈ 16.67

Final Approximate Answer:17
Example 4
Approximate:
7.2²
Solution

7.2 ≈ 7
Now square:
7² = 49

Final Approximate Answer: 49
Example 5
Approximate:

Solution

Nearest perfect square to 63 = 64
√64 = 8

Final Approximate Answer: 8
